3. Theme

The theme of the play and movie, Anne Frank reveals that freedom may not be earned so easily when we are under control physically, but our minds are able to think freely on our own. They may be hiding in the Secret Annex from the Nazis, in order to be free, but the Nazis can not have the right to control their minds as well. Even though they may try to control the minds of the Jews, the Jews are able to think strong and keep their own culture to themselves. Also, in the movie, there are signs of freedom shown by the birds flying in the windows, throughout the scenes. The birds in the ending, represent freedom from the Nazis, when the Holocaust was over. I think that the author is trying to give us a message to the planet that we should always remember that we are able to have freedom mentally and internally, even though someone may be in charge of us. In the Secret Annex, the characters learn that even though they are in hiding, they can having love, peace, and relationship with one another, because they are free to think what they want. We should always carry hope with us no matter what, and we should not be controlled over powerful people, but be able to be an individual and stand up for your own beliefs and culture.
